A Review of the Down Animal and When to Refer

Presented by,
Christine Senneca, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology)
Wednesday, February 28, 2018
7:00pm

Veterinarians are often presented with patients that are non-ambulatory, and these cases have either an acute or chronic onset of signs. In this lecture we will review the neurologic examination and neuro-localization for animals with spinal and neuromuscular disease, the most common differentials, and a few rather unusual causes of signs. Furthermore, we will discuss some important conditions that frequently mimic neurologic dysfunction and go through the recommended diagnostic steps, treatment options, and associated prognoses, including what can easily be performed at a primary care facility.
Lecture provides 1 credit of complimentary CE to veterinarians and veterinary technicians through RACE.

jager-2It’s Lame Being Lame

Gayle Jaeger, DVM, MSpVM, DACVS

Wednesday, November 9, 2016
7:00pm

When working with canine orthopedics, veterinarians are no strangers to the appearance of clinical lameness in their patients. However, lameness should not be a catch-all term, as its presentation can indicate various and sometimes unexpected underlying issues.  In this lecture, we will review case presentations and discuss a variety of clinical lameness in dogs; identifying the site of lameness, possible differentials, diagnostic techniques and treatments. Join us as we unearth and review recent innovations and practical application techniques regarding a symptom that we see on an almost daily basis.

Intravenous Lipid Therapy for Dogs and Cats

Laura Ateca, VMD, DACVECC

Tuesday, September 20, 2016
7:00pm

Intravenous lipid therapy is a relatively new treatment for toxicities in companion animals and much about it is still not fully understood. Its more recent popularity in veterinary medicine has inspired many publications and debates on its effectiveness. During this lecture, we will delve into the general methods of approach to toxicities in pets, as well as discuss the theories behind lipid therapy’s mode of action and the clinical evidence behind its use. Intravenous lipid therapy is an innovative and possibly life saving technique that could raise the bar for quality patient care in years to come. Join us as we investigate the various facets of this promising new procedure.

Bacterial Pneumonia: So Many Antibiotics to Choose From

John Anastasio, DVM, DACVECC
Medical Director of VRC

Wednesday, July 13, 2016
7:00pm

This lecture will provide an evidence-based discussion about common etiologies, diagnoses, and empirical treatments of bacterial pneumonia in dogs. Bacterial pneumonia is a potentially life-threatening disease that affects dogs of all ages. Early identification and treatment with appropriate empirical antibiotics has been shown to improve outcomes in humans with severe sepsis. Applying this concept to our patients brings to light the following questions: Which  empirical antibiotics are appropriate for the treatment of pneumonia? Should there be a different approach for patients with hospital acquired pneumonia? Do we have enough veterinary literature on the subject to make proper recommendations? The hour will focus on addressing these questions by evaluating the different types of bacterial pneumonia, veterinary literature assessments of antibiotic therapy, and various methods used to ensure appropriate spectrum of antibiotic coverage.

Lecture provides 1 credit of complimentary CE through RACE to veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
